Barbiturates Addiction & Abuse Treatment

Barbiturate abuse and addiction is a frightening chemical dependency as this powerful sedative-hypnotic was responsible for the deaths of several well-known musical figures. You may feel fearful about the abuse of these dangerous drugs and experience even more terror knowing how life-threatening withdrawal from barbiturates is.

Abilene is here to help. We offer a chemical dependency program that is based upon the 12-step model for addiction and focuses upon treating barbiturate addiction as well as co-occurring mental disorders. In this way, we can treat both conditions you are suffering from.

Barbiturates, often called “downers,” can leave a person feeling intoxicated as if they were drunk. These dangerous drugs are often used illegally to counteract the effects of abuse of stimulants such as meth and cocaine.

The dangers of barbiturates are what caused physicians to almost entirely stop prescribing these drugs. Not only do they have a narrow therapeutic-to-toxic window, meaning that the dose required to induce sedation is very similar to the dose that may lead to overdose and death, but they also become addictive after as short a period as one month. Without proper detox and treatment, one cannot safely withdrawal from taking barbiturates.

At Abilene, we offer a detox program and medical management of associated health problems.

Treatment for Barbiturate Abuse at Abilene

Our dual diagnosis program has been created for individuals who struggle with chemical dependency as well as a mental health diagnosis. We aim to focus upon each part of the treatment equally. Research indicates that the best treatment for barbiturate abuse is an inpatient setting that involves equal parts therapy and medication management.

When you come to us, we will assess you to ascertain what substances are in your system and what other disorders you are struggling with before we begin the detoxification process. During the detox process, you’ll be monitored closely by our trained medical staff to ensure that you safely detox from barbiturates as we treat any health-related conditions.

Medication may be used only during the detox part of your stay with us or in the long-term to manage any co-occurring disorders. You will work with your treatment team to determine what medication regime will work best for you.

After you are medically stable and successfully detoxified, you will enter our inpatient program where you will continue your recovery. We use a number of therapies to help you on the road to wellness.

Individual therapy is used to work through the issues surrounding your addiction, the problems it has caused and explore potential solutions for the struggles in your life. You will learn new coping mechanisms and ways to manage your stresses to prevent a relapse.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is used to identify and correct discrepancies in the way you process events. Instead of thinking, “I am hopeless, I’ll never recover,” your therapist will work to reframe that into a more constructive thought, “I am learning how to recovery. I see hope.” By changing the way you think, you can change your actions.

Rational emotive behavior therapy (REBT) is a form of CBT that works to resolve emotional and behavioral issues to allow you to lead the happiest and most fulfilling life you can.

Group therapy is one of the best ways you can work through your addiction and co-occurring disorders as it allows you the chance to work with others experiencing similar challenges. Process-based groups will allow for frank discussions about the way addiction has impacted your life, while psychoeducational groups will focus on teaching you more about medications and co-occurring disorders.

Family therapy is vital to restoring balance and harmony into your life. In family sessions, your family will have the opportunity to learn more about your addiction as well as express their emotions about how your addiction has impacted them. We will also connect your family to outside resources such as Al-Anon and Nar-Anon to allow for continued healing.

In addition to traditional therapies, we offer a number of alternative therapies. These include:

  • Yoga
  • N.A. and A.A.
  • Music therapy
  • Recreational programs
  • Spiritual counseling

Continuing Care – What Happens Next?

After you and your treatment team have decided that you’re ready to face the next steps in your recovery, you will create an aftercare plan that details your continuing healing. Many people opt to step-down from our inpatient chemical dependency program into one of our popular outpatient programs. We offer Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) that are centered on your specific needs and will allow your continued recovery.

If you’re heading home to continue your recovery, you will be connected to our amazing outpatient treatment center or with a local provider and available community resources.
