Depression Treatment at Abilene

Our treatment programs are recognized for their quality of care. We provide each patient with state-of-the-art psychiatric treatment, making sure to customize each treatment plan based upon personal needs.

Medication may be the first step along your recovery process, focusing on getting the symptoms of your depression under control and managing co-occurring disorders. If it has been decided that medication will be part of your treatment, you will work with a member of your treatment team for medication management. Regular assessments will be conducted to track your progress. Usually as individuals learn how to better cope with their emotions they are able to decrease or stop medication altogether. Although medication is helpful, the most effective treatment for depression is a combination of medication and therapeutic treatment. Some of the therapeutic treatments offered at Abilene include individual therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, rational emotive behavioral therapy, group therapy, and family therapy.

Individual therapy gives you the opportunity to work one-on-one with a therapist to identify and cope with the underlying issues surrounding your depression. Some sessions focused on conflict resolution, problem-solving techniques, and symptom management of co-occurring disorders.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on restructuring the negative feelings and thoughts that you are experiencing. By identifying and challenging these cognitive distortions you are better able to change your behavior.

Rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) focuses on helping you to resolve your behavioral and emotional problems that are stopping you from leading a productive and happy life. This form of therapy allows you to take responsibility for your distress so that you can eliminate present emotional and behavioral problems.

Group therapy is a major part of the recovery process at Abilene, allowing you to socialize and connect with other individuals who are experiencing similar problems. These process-based and psycho-educational groups allow you to see that you are not alone; that others suffer from depression as well. During process-based groups, you will work through your feelings with a group of peers about a given topic, such as coping mechanisms or anger management. Psycho-educational groups provide you with knowledge about mental health related issues.

Family therapy is an important part of our depression program. Family therapy sessions are focused on resolving family dynamics that may be related to your depression. Time will also be spent educating your family about depression and how they can aid your recovery. Most patients have at least one family meeting during their stay, but we like to incorporate more if we are able.

In addition to standard treatments, Abilene is proud to offer a variety of non-traditional therapeutic techniques. Depending on your treatment needs you may be involved in some of the following:

  • Music therapy
  • Yoga therapy
  • Spiritual counseling
  • Anger management
  • A.A. and N.A.
