Suicidal Attempts Treatment

If you are struggling with thoughts of suicide, we want you to know that you are not alone. Many people have experienced passing thoughts of suicide. It’s when these thoughts become more frequent that they begin to cause problems. Certain life situations can cause individuals to have a great deal of stress and emotional pain that they have no idea how to cope with. If these feelings become too intense, suicidal thoughts may turn into suicidal attempts.

Suicidal ideation is the presence of thoughts about ending one’s life. For some these may be detailed plans while others only experience brief considerations. While not everyone who has suicidal ideations act upon them, some individuals may make suicide attempts. You can never be too careful with someone’s life and this is why immediate action must be taken.

At Abilene we understand that you may be hesitant to share your thoughts and feelings with us due to the societal stigma surrounding suicide. However, experiencing suicidal thoughts does not make you a weak person, it simply means that you are an individual who needs help dealing with the pain. We know that the suffering you are experiencing can leave you feeling hopeless and alone. You may have come to believe that suicide is the only way to break free from the pain.

Suicide is not the only solution; it’s a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

Types of Therapy We Use to Treat Suicidal Ideation

At Abilene Behavioral Health, we use a number of therapeutic options to provide you with the most appropriate treatment plan for your struggles. We recognize that individuals often struggle with more than suicidal thoughts when they come to us. These co-occurring disorders can get in the way of enjoying life and complicate feelings of suicide.

Your treatment team may recommend medication to manage symptoms of any mental illnesses so that you’re able to take an active role in your recovery. Often, people can be weaned off these medications as they learn new coping strategies, while others will require long-term medication management to remain symptom-free. Some of the treatments we offer include:

Individual therapy sessions are designed to deal directly with you and the struggles you are facing. Any co-occurring disorders will also be addressed during these sessions as well as exploring new problem-solving techniques to use in stressful situations.

Rational emotive behavioral therapy (REBT) focuses upon helping you fix the behavioral and emotional problems that are preventing you from leading a productive and happy life. This therapy will encourage you to take responsibility for your distress thereby allowing you the control to eliminate emotional and behavioral problems.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) works to address the ways in which you think. CBT focuses on identifying negative thoughts and challenging them. We will help you to restructure your thoughts to provide you with the ability to see situations as they are, not as you think they are.

Group therapy is designed to allow individuals the opportunity to connect with others who are having suicidal thoughts so they learn to realize they are not alone in their suffering. Process-based groups and psycho-educational groups will be centered on specific topics. These groups are meant to be informative and provide an outlet for processing emotions.

Family dynamics are an important topic to focus upon during the therapeutic process as loved ones may inadvertently cause some of the problems a suicidal person faces. For this reason, we use family sessions to incorporate your family into your treatment to address any familial issues. Sessions are used to allow loved ones to express their concerns and to help them understand the pain you are experiencing.

Abilene offers a number of experiential activities to help with your symptoms in alternate ways. These may include:

  • Yoga therapy
  • Anger management
  • A.A. and N.A.
  • Spiritual counseling
  • Music therapy

Continuing Care – What Comes Next?

Continuity of care is an important part of the treatment process as it helps individuals to remain successful in their treatment after leaving our inpatient program. Abilene offers outpatient programs that are often the right step after you are stabilized and no longer need the strict structure of an inpatient program.

Our onsite Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and traditional outpatient therapy exist to allow you to continue your recovery so that you are able to transition back into your community. Each of these programs provide individual therapy, family therapy, and medication management. The type of program you transfer into and the therapies you will participate in will be addressed in your aftercare plan.

We understand your pain. You’re not alone. Let us help.
